What Cmdr can do

Built in Rust, designed around your keyboard. Cmdr is in open beta: every feature carries an honest status pill, and hovering a pill explains what the status means.

Core

The file manager itself: two panes, safe file operations, and everything you reach for daily.

Dual-pane file explorer

Two panes, virtual scrolling through 100k+ files, live file watching, and Quick Look. The heart of the app.

Stable

File operations

Copy, move, delete, rename, and new folders with progress, conflict handling, rollback, backgrounding, and parallel processing when possible. The most-tested code in the app.

Stable

File viewer

Opens even 10+ GB files instantly, with search and word wrap.

Stable

Tabs

Per-pane tabs with pinning, history, and reopen closed tab.

Stable

Drag and drop

Drag files in, out, and between panes, including to and from Finder and other apps.

Stable

Operation log

A durable history of every copy, move, delete, and rename, with rollback. The dialog that shows it is still bare-bones.

Alpha

Archives

Browse, create, edit, and extract zip, tar, and 7z archives like folders, including password-protected ones.

Alpha

Select files dialog

Wildcard and regex matching work well; AI selection is cloud-only and still misses edge cases.

Alpha

Go to path

Paste or type any path and jump there; it’s new, so recents and edge-case path handling are still settling.

Beta

Keyboard shortcuts

Customize any shortcut, with conflict detection and scope awareness.

Keyboard Stable

Command palette

Fuzzy-find every action with ⌘⇧P.

Keyboard Stable

Network drives (SMB)

Browsing and fast direct transfers work on common NAS setups, names with characters SMB forbids copy through, a server that goes quiet recovers, and a share reachable through two mount points keeps working when one dies; unusual server configs can still cause surprises.

Connect Beta

Android devices (MTP)

Fast transfers on most devices, but macOS sometimes claims the device first and some phones need a reconnect.

Connect Beta

More file systems

S3 buckets, SFTP, WebDAV, NFS, and more.

Connect Planned

Windows and Linux support

Bring Cmdr to more platforms.

Connect Planned

Git browser

Browse history, branches, tags, and stashes like folders. Very large repos can take a moment to load.

Extras Beta

Download notifications

Catches downloads and jumps to the latest with one key.

Extras Beta

Plugins

Extend Cmdr with your own scripts and tools.

Extras Planned

Indexing

Cmdr knows your whole drive, so finding a file takes a second instead of a coffee break.

Live full-disk index

Indexes your whole drive in ~4 minutes, then stays current by watching real-time file system events. Folder sizes show right in the listing, and a background verifier makes sure they don’t drift.

Stable

Disk space visualizer

A built-in treemap to see what’s eating your disk.

Planned

AI

A model that runs on your Mac, plus your own cloud keys when you want a smarter one.

Private LLM included

Cmdr ships with a 3B language model that runs on your Mac. Nothing leaves your machine. For a smarter AI, you can connect OpenAI/Anthropic/Google/etc., or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

Beta

Ask Cmdr

Chat with an AI agent about your files. It sees your files and your file op history, knows your important folders, and can proactively suggest move/rename/delete/unzip actions, which you can review and approve/reject. Fully optional (you can use Cmdr as just a regular file manager!). Early stage with rough edges, but safe because all actions need approval from you. The agent can do nothing on its own. Can use an on-device model for complete privacy.

Alpha

AI rename

Describe the names you want and Ask Cmdr proposes them, reading the text inside your images. Every row shows the file and the evidence behind its name, you allow, edit, or deny each one, and the whole batch is one click from undone.

Alpha

AI file organization

Say “clean up my Downloads folder” and approve or reject each suggested move.

Alpha

Tell me about this

Right-click any file for a quick AI explanation of what it is.
